Artist Statement:
Curiosity is the foundation of everything.
Art is expansiveness. Expansiveness is open; no territory markers to see = infinite possibilities.
My paintings are mind-frolicking-idea-collages pieced together after wandering around woods and waterways of South Carolina then scratching an infinite learning itch in sociology, philosophy, mythology, anthropology, psychology, current events, etc.
Contemplation of our human relationship with the natural world is frequent– whether it’s how we pollute waterways or how we use animals as symbols to express our emotions.
Hopefully, the bright colors and child-like dream-logic are a pretty sweetener easing the medicine of darker underlying themes (i.e. an extinct Carolina Parakeet).
Slight cheekiness in my paintings satisfies an acknowledgment of the absurdity of life.
When asked "what does this mean" the favorite reply is a quote by Marcel Duchamp: "The viewer completes the work of art."
